If you are being completely honest with yourself, when you are given the choice of the
‘green’ option, or sticking to what you know, you tend to choose familiarity right?
Most of us don’t venture outside of what we have always known, but what we don’t realise is the detrimental effects we are having on the Earth we claim to love so much. Environmental
awareness can be defined as being aware of the natural environment and making choices
that are of benefit to the earth, rather than choices that will cause it harm.
But raising awareness starts with yourself, because how can you educate others when you haven’t even educated yourself?
By raising awareness for the environment and how we can work to improve current
situations, we are teaching people the importance of preserving the environment, and the dangers of carrying on as we currently do. We are obligated, as human beings, to protect
the Earth. People need to understand the full extent of the crisis, and the implications for
the environment if we continue as we are.
Humans are massively responsible for the damage and vandalization of the environment,
we are in no way innocent in this form of destruction. The destruction of the environment is turning into a global crisis and is threatening the health of plants, animals and humans.
An example of an environmental issue is deforestation. This is a prime example of the actions of human beings having a harmful effect on the environment. We need forests in order to balance out the levels of carbon dioxide from the air, and by cutting them down we are not helping anyone.
Climate change is merely just one of the negative effects of deforestation, because through the rises in the greenhouse effect, global temperatures are also on the rise, leading to floods, hurricanes, etc.
This is just one example of the jeopardy that the environment around us is in. Just one.
Looking at the detrimental effects of just one of these issues, doesn’t it put into perspective
the amount of work that needs to be done to start reversing this? By introducing projects
and groups that are specifically targeted to improving this cause, we are beginning to start
the work that needs to be done.
Without a healthy Earth we would be unable to survive, so why are we bringing this onto
ourselves? It is almost as if humans are on a suicide mission. Why are most of us so clueless
about what we’re doing to ourselves?
We are launching a green arts project this summer. It is vital for all our survival that women and girls are brought into the Green conversation. Without the voice of women, it can‘t work and we stay stuck
Next time you see a poster saying “Go Green”. Pay attention!
