OUR STORY

Born in the heart of the pandemic, GIRL GRIND UK refused to stand still. We launched in 2020 with a clear mission: to empower women and racially marginalized creatives in the West Midlands arts sector.

From day one, we hustled securing £45,000 in funding to launch three groundbreaking projects in our first year, impacting 75 participants and hiring our first team members. By 2022, our award-winning She Don Did It program had secured £30,000 from Youth Music Charity, proving that our work wasn’t just important, it was essential.

With investment from the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, our reach skyrocketed from a 10,000-strong online audience to a global stage, with over a billion people watching. We moved into our own premises, expanded our team, and scaled our impact delivering life-changing programs for 150+ participants annually while collaborating with 35+ industry partners, including B:Music and Symphony Hall.

Now, as we celebrate our fifth anniversary, we’ve raised nearly £500,000 in funding, launched 15 transformative projects, and built a movement that’s shaping the future of music and culture. Our founder, Namywa, now sits on the Culture Central board, represents our mission at the House of Lords, and speaks alongside national leaders on the future of the creative industries.

But we’re just getting started. As we look ahead to 2030, we’re developing FIVE, a landmark report documenting our journey and vision for the future.

We are bold, courageous, free, and honest. We are GIRL GRIND UK. And we’re here to change the game.

WHAT WE DO NOW

At GIRL GRIND UK, we have transformed into a music-led organization, unwavering in our commitment to empowering women and racially marginalized creatives within the music industry. What began as a passionate grassroots movement has blossomed into a leading force that actively shapes the music landscape. Our award-winning music programs, such as She Don Did It, provide unparalleled access to real-world music experiences, from production and songwriting to live events and creative entrepreneurship. We don’t just talk about change—we create it. Through mentorship and hands-on opportunities, we equip our participants with the skills, confidence, and industry connections needed to thrive.

Our collaborations with B:Music, Symphony Hall, and Youth Music Charity have made us a key player in the push for greater representation, inclusion, and visibility in the industry. We are not just providing a platform—we are shaping the future of music, ensuring marginalized voices aren’t just heard but are celebrated and elevated. As a forward-thinking, change-driven organization, we are relentless in our pursuit of creating real pathways for success and driving lasting, positive transformation in the music industry. At GIRL GRIND UK, we are rewriting the rules, breaking barriers, and empowering the next generation of music leaders.
